Very high SIL fine

Very high SIL fine

Recently it became known that BP accepts to pay a fine of 50 million dollar en to reserve another 500 million dollar for further and better  implementation of the SIL standard IEC 61511 (implementation in the USA: ANSI/ISA S84.00.01-2004). BP used the LOPA method not always correctly.

In the wake of the Texas City refinery explosion in 2005, BP agreed with OSHA to completely implement the SIL standard and to reduce the risks in a transparent and verifiable way. However, BP failed to do that in time.

For those people who say that the IEC 61511 standard is not required by law and therefore not required: in theory you are right because an equivalent approach is normally allowed, in practice you will end up with the IEC 61511 approach. See the OSHA and other regulators approaches.

So do not wait for the next incident!  Start/ continue to implement the SIL concept today. If not, it may cost you a lot of money and your reputation.
